RAJ KAPOOR SPECIAL:-
Ranbirraj "Raj" Kapoor (Hindi: राज कपूर, Punjabi: ਰਾਜ ਕਪੂਰ, Rāj Kapūr, 14 December 1924 – 2 June 1988), also known as The Show-Man, was an Indian film actor, producer and director of Hindi cinema.[1] [2] He was the winner of nine Filmfare Awards in India, and a two-time nominee for the Palme d'Or grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his films Awaara (1951) and Boot Polish (1954). His performance in Awaara was ranked as one of the top ten greatest performances of all time by Time magazine.[3] His films were commercial successes that attracted worldwide audiences, particularly in Asia and Europe. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.
Raj Kapoor was born in Peshawar, Pakistan to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni (Rama) Devi Kapoor (née Mehra). He was the eldest of six children in the family.[4][5][6] He was the grandson of Dewan Basheshwarnath Kapoor and great-grandson of Dewan Keshavmal Kapoor, part of the famous Kapoor family. Two of Raj's brothers are actors Shashi Kapoor (a.k.a. Balbir Raj Kapoor) and the late Shammi Kapoor (aka Shamsher Raj Kapoor); the other two died in infancy. He also had a sister named Urmila Sial.
Raj Kapoor attended Colonel Brown Cambridge School, Dehradun in the 1930s.He is also known to have studied briefly in St.Danny's High School in Rawalpindi,Pakistan.
Raj Kapoor suffered from asthma in his later years; he died of complications related to asthma in 1988 at the age of 63. At the time of his death, he was working on the movie Heena (an Indo-Pakistan based love story). The film was later completed by his sons Randhir and Rishi Kapoor, and narrated by his brother Shammi Kapoor. The movie was released in 1991 and became a huge success at the Box Office. When he was being conferred upon the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, where his brother Shashi Kapoor was also present, the crowd was clapping around when President Venkataraman, who saw Kapoor's discomfort, came down the stage to give the award to the legend in the middle of thundering claps where he was breathing his last breath. And suddenly Kapoor collapsed, and was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment. The country's top cardiologists tried their best, but could not save him.

The Kapoor family lived in Peshawar and were khatris but they were also landowners in the canal colony of Lyallpur, British India, which is now called Faisalabad in the Punjab province of present-day Pakistan. He was married to Krishna Kapoor, sister of actors, Rajendra Nath and Prem Nath.[10][11]
Kapoor is also known to have had a longtime romantic relationship with the renowned actress Nargis during the 1950s.[citation needed] The couple starred in several films together, including Awaara and Shree 420.
Three of Kapoor's grandchildren are currently stars in the Bollywood film industry. His granddaughters are Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, the daughters of Raj's son Randhir Kapoor and his wife Babita. His grandson Ranbir Kapoor is son of Rishi Kapoor and his wife Neetu Singh.
Shankar-Jaikishan were his music director of choice. He worked with them in 20 films in all including 10 of his own films from Barsaat until Kal Aaj Aur Kal. (Jagte Raho with Salil Chowdhury and Ab Dilli Dur Nahin being two exceptions in this period). Only after Jaikishan died, did he turn to a different music director – Laxmikant-Pyarelal for Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and Prem Rog (later on his children used Laxmikant-Pyarelal for Prem Granth also) and Ravindra Jain for (Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Henna). It is interesting to note that Raj Kapoor acted in a movie with music by Madan Mohan only once(twice) i.e. Dhoon (1953)&Aashiana(1952) which featured duet Hum pyar karenge by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, only instance Hemnat Kumar giving playback to Raj Kapoor, and did only one movie with O. P. Nayyar (Do Ustad).
Mukesh was Raj Kapoor's almost exclusive singing voice in almost all of his films. Also, when Mukesh died, Raj had said, Main ne apni aawaaz ko kho diya... (I have lost my voice...). However Manna Dey has also sung many notable and super-hit songs for Raj Kapoor, for instance in Shree 420 and Chori Chori.

SHAILENDRA SPECIAL
Shankardas Kesarilal (August 30, 1923 – December 14, 1966), popularly known by his pen name Shailendra, was a popular Indian Hindi lyricist. Noted for his association with the filmmaker Raj Kapoor and the composers Shankar-Jaikishan, he wrote lyrics for several successful Hindi film songs in the 1950s and the 1960s.Shailendra was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab (Undivided India), and spent his childhood in Mathura

Career as a lyricist

Shailendra started his career as a clerk with Indian Railways. His job brought him to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1947. He started writing poetry during these days.
The filmmaker Raj Kapoor noticed Shailendra, when the latter was reading out his poem Jalta hai Punjab at a mushaira (poetic symposium).[2] Kapoor offered to buy poems written by Shailendra and use them for his movie Aag (1948). Shailendra, a member of the left wing IPTA, was wary of mainstream Indian cinema and refused. However, after his wife became pregnant, Shailendra himself approached Raj Kapoor in need of money.[1] At this time, Raj Kapoor was filming Barsaat (1949), and two of the film songs had not been written yet. For INR 500, Shailendra wrote these two songs: Patli kamar hai and Barsaat mein. The music for Barsaat was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
The team of Raj Kapoor, Shailendra and Shankar-Jaikishan went on to produce many other hit songs. The song "Awara Hoon" from the 1951 film Awaara, written by Shailendra, became the most appreciated Hindustani film song outside India at the time.[3]
In the days when composers would recommend lyricists to producers, Shankar-Jaikishan once promised Shailendra that they would recommend him around, but didn't keep their promise. Shailendra sent them a note with the lines, "Chhoti Si Yeh Duniya, Pehchaane Raaste Hain. Kahin To Miloge, Phir Poochhenge Haal" (The world is small, the roads are known. We'll meet sometime, and ask 'How do you do?'". Realizing the meaning of the message, Shankar-Jaikishan realized what the message meant and having said sorry, turned the lines into a popular song. The song was featured in the film Rangoli (1962), for which the producer Rajendra Singh Bedi wanted to sign up Majrooh Sultanpuri as the lyricst. However, Shankar-Jaikishen insisted on Shailendra and the producer had to oblige.[4]
Apart from Shankar-Jaikishan, Shailendra also shared a rapport with composers such as Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati), Sachin Dev Burman (Guide, Bandini, Kala Bazar), and Ravi Shankar (Anuradha). Apart from Raj Kapoor, he shared a rapport with filmmakers such as Bimal Roy (Do Bigha Zameen, Madhumati, Bandini) and Dev Anand (Guide and Kala Bazar).

Last years:

In the mid-1960s, Shailendra invested heavily in the production of the movie Teesri Kasam (1966), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. However, the film was a commercial failure.[5] The falling health resulting from tensions associated with film production and anxiety due to financial loss, coupled with alcohol abuse, ultimately led to his death. Shailendra's son Shaily Shailendra also became a lyricist. The contemporary lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri stated once in a TV-interview that Shailendra was the best lyricist the Indian film industry ever had.
Shailendra won the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award three times.
  • 1958: "Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai" (Yahudi)
  • 1959: "Sab Kuch Seekha Hamne" (Anari)

KAVI PRADEEP SPECIAL ON HIS DETH ANNIVERSERY
Kavi Pradeep (1915–1998), born Ramchandra Baryanji Dwivedi,[1] was a renowned poet and songwriter who is best known for his patriotic song Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo written as a tribute to the soldiers who had died defending the country during the Sino-Indian War.
His first recognition came for his patriotic lyrics for the film Bandhan (1940). His status as a nationalistic writer got immortalized for writing a daringly patriotic song Door Hato Ae Duniya Walo (Move Away O Outsiders) in India's first golden jubilee hit Kismet (1943) because he was forced to go underground to avoid arrest immediately after the film's release that invited the ire of British government.[2]
In a career span of nearly five decades, Kavi Pradeep wrote about 1,700 songs[1] and nationalistic poems including the lyrics for some 72 films, including hits like Chal Chal Re Naujawan in film Bandhan (1940) and Aao Bachcho Tumhein Dikhayen and De Dee Hame Azaadi Bina Khadag Bina Dhaal in film Jagriti (1954)[3] In 1958, HMV, released an album of 13 songs with his lyrics. He was made the Rashtrakavi, (Poet Laureate), and came to be known as, Kavi Pradeep [1]
In 1997, he was honoured by India's highest award in Cinema, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement.
During 1962 (Indo-China) war days, he heard about Param Vir Major Shaitan Singh Bhati. He was so touched by his sacrifice and bravery that he penned down the lines "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon". This song was originally supposed to be sung by Asha Bhosle, due to a misunderstanding between composer C. Ramchandra and Lata Mangeshkar. Kavi Pradeep though, was adamant about having Lata Mangeshkar sing the song, as he felt that hers was the only voice that could do justice to the number. C. Ramchandra was unsure whether Mangeshkar would agree to sing, so Kavi Pradeep began the task of convincing her to hear the song. On hearing the song she was moved so much that she instantly agreed to sing the song on condition that Kavi Pradeep be present at the rehearsals.
Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo (O people of my country) went on to become one of the greatest patriotic songs of the country. It was while Lata Mangeshkar was rendering the song that the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was moved to tears. For writing the song Kavi Pradeep was conferred the honour of "Rashtriya Kavi" (National Poet) by the government of India.
The song was famously performed live, by Lata Mangeshkar, in the presence of Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru at the Ramlila grounds, New Delhi, on Republic Day, 26 January 1963,[5] and moved him to tears,[2] and a copy of the soundtrack spool was also gifted to him on the occasion. Despite many offers, Kavi Pradeep pledged the royalties of the song to 'War Widows Fund' and on 25 August 2005 Bombay High Court ordered Saregama (HMV) to pay INR 1 million as arrears in royalty to the Fund.[8]

MUKESH WITH DEELIP KUMAR

The Peshawar-born legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar, real name - Muhammad Yousaf Khan, turns 90 on Tuesday (today).

He was born on December 11, 1922 to a Peshawar-based fruit trader, Lala Ghulam Sarwar.
The handsome Dilip Kumar shares his birth place with Hindi cinema pioneer Prithviraj Kapoor (1901-72), his eldest son Ranbirraj “Raj” Kapoor (1924-88), renowned Indian movie villain Amjad Khan (1940-92), the 66-year old Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna, Prem Nath (1926-1992) and with the likes of the pretty Madhubala (1933-69)-the Mary More of Indian cinema- in the 1950s and 1960s.

Meanwhile, the King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan too has traced his roots in Peshawar. Shahrukh’s late father, Taj Mohammad Khan, was born and raised here in this historic city, which is today dubbed the stronghold of Taliban. Shahrukh Khan had himself visited Peshawar in 1978 and 1979, as newspaper archives reveal. Top Indian actor Anil Kapoor’s father and film producer of yore, Surinder Kapoor, also hailed from Peshawar.

Coming back to Dilip Kumar, his first film “Jawar Bhaata” was released in 1944.
From 1944 to 1998, this actor-turned-Senator had starred in just 68 box office hits including “Milan,” “Jugnu,” “Shaheed,” “Mela,” “Ghar Ki Izzat,” “Aan,” “Tarana,” “Andaz,” “Badal,” “Arzoo,” “Devdas,”“Hul Chull,” “Sangdil,” “Daag,” “Mughul-e-Azam,” “Insanaiyat,” “Musafir,” “Ganga Jumna,” “Mashaal,” “Kohinoor,” “Leader,” “Ram Aur Shyam,” “Karanti,” “Gopi,” “Vidhatta,” “Footpath,” “Aag Ka Darya,” “Shakti,” “Mazdoor,” “Duniya,” “Saudagar,” “Qila,” and “Karma” etc.

Along with Shahrukh Khan, he shares the record for winning the most number of Filmfare awards (eight wins). Besides these eight wins, he had gone on to receive 19 Filmfare nominations throughout his illustrious career. The Government of India had honoured him with the prestigious “Padma Bhushan” Award in 1991 and the “Dadasaheb Phalke” Award in 1994. Remember, after 1976, he had taken a five-year-break from movies. He was also appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai (an honorary portfolio) in 1980. The government of Pakistan had also decorated Dilip with “Nishan-e-Imtiaz,” the highest civil award, in 1997.
Top Indian newspaper “The Times of India” had quoted one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, as saying that Dilip Kumar was his idol and inspiration.
Shahrukh Khan, was once quoted by a section of Indian media as saying: “No one can copy him (Dilip) and idiots like me try to copy him.”

Another esteemed Indian newspaper “The Hindu,” in its December 11, 2008 edition, had stated: “His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emoting in Indian cinema. He was the first actor to receive Filmfare Best Actor Award and holds the record for maximum number of Filmfare Awards won for that category.” On August 28, 2010, “The Hindu” had written: “Films like “Andaz”, “Jogan”, “Daag”, “Foot Path”, “Devdas” and “Ganga Jumna” stand testimony to his versatility.”
“The Hindu,” in its afore-cited edition, had quoted Dilip as saying,” My tragic performances required method acting as there was a matter of meter and chord for each shade in my performance. But when I shifted to light-hearted, comic characters in “Aan”, “Azad”, “Kohinoor”, “Leader” and “Ram Aur Shyam” I tried my best to transcend method as it has its limits. I learnt to play the sitar for one and a half years before the ‘Madhuban mein Radhika nache re’ sequence in “Kohinoor”. It had to be spontaneous yet real. Similarly, when Salil Chowdhury requested me to lower my voice by three notes to sing Lagi nahin chute Ram in “Musafir”, I did not opt for any method.”

On his favourite actors and directors, Dilip Kumar Khan had once remarked at a function: “From Hollywood, with deep respect, I would like to mention Sir Charles Laughton, Paul Muni, Marlon Brando and Richard Burton. Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Katherine Hepburn are my all-time favourites. From India, I consider Ashok Kumar, Motilal, Balraj Sahini, Chabi Biswas and Pahari Sanyal as icons of natural performances. Uttam Kumar and Shivaji Ganesan were very powerful actors and I must mention the polished performances of Sabitri Chatterjee and Arundhati Sinha. From the past four decades, Amitabh Bachhan, Aamir Khan and Tabu are gifted performers. Among the directors, Amiya Chakrabarty, Nitin Bose, Bimal Ray, Zia Sarhadi and K. Asif and Mehboob Khan were unforgettable.”

Dilip has two wives, Saira Bano and Aasma. In 1940, Dilip had started his practical life as a canteen owner and a dry fruit supplier in the Indian city of Pune. According to the Encyclopedia of Hindi Cinema, a renowned film writer, Bhagwati Charan Varma, had actually given him the screen name “Dilip Kumar.” In 1962, eminent British director, David Lean, had offered Dilip a key role in his movie “The Lawrence of Arabia,” but the choosy and selective Indian actor had refused to do so, paving way for the Egyptian Omar Sharif to perform in his place. Very few would know that Dilip’s younger brother, Nasir Khan, had also played a role in Pakistan’s first film “Teri Yaad” in 1948. Nasir is regarded as Pakistan’s first film hero, though he was not successful and only appeared in one more film – “Shahida” in 1949 – before sailing for neighbouring India.
Films refused:- Dilip Kumar was very choosy, and turned down lead roles in many films which eventually were released to great box office success, including Lawrence of Arabia, Pyaasa, The Rains Came and Sangam.

Playback singers:-

During his Bollywood career, Dilip Kumar was most often voiced by Mohammed Rafi. apart from Md. Rafi, others two provided his voice were: Talat Mahmood and Mukesh (until 1958), who was also the main voice of Dilip Kumar's competitor Raj Kapoor. Kishore Kumar was chosen to playback the song "Saala Main To Saab Bangaya" for the film Sagina(1974).

Abb yad na kar bhul ja ae dil wo fasana
Wo pyar ki ghadiya wo mohabbat ka zamana
Abb yad na kar
Kyo yad tujhe aati hai biti huyi bate
Too bhul ja
Tu bhul ja wo pyar ke din pyar ki rate
Abb tut chuka hai woh tera khwab suhana
Woh pyar ki ghadiya wo mohabbat ka zamana
Abb yad na kar
Ae jhumati lehrati hui mast hawao
Ae pyare najaro, rangin fizao
Tum jake unhe aaj mera hal sunao
Tum jake unhe aaj mera hal sunao
Keh do ke mera dil hai tumhara hi diwana
Hai pyar ki ghadiya hai mohabbat ka zamana
Aati hain mere kano me ye kiski sadaye
Tum dil se khud hi puchh lo ham kyo ye bataye
Yad aane laga
Yad aane laga
Yad aane laga, phir mujhe woh bhula fasana
Wo pyar ki ghadiya wo mohabbat ka zamana
Aa ja ke abb is dard bhare dil ko bhulaye
Armano ke gulashan me naye phul khilaye
Ham tere hain, dil tera hai yeh bhul na jana
Bhul na jana
Yeh bhul na jana
Ham tere hain, dil tera hai yeh bhul na jana
Bhul na jana, yeh bhul na jana.
